Our leadership makes IICS the exceptional, forward thinking educational environment that it is. IICS Primary and Secondary Principals provide the direction that drives us towards our strategic goals
- Primary Principal
- Dear Parents,
Welcome to our school. We are greatly looking forward to the year ahead and sharing with you the great learning that is happening here.
We keep parents informed on a weekly basis about events in the Primary school through our school blog. In addition, this year we have introduced blog sites for every class in the primary school. Your child’s teacher uses the class blog regularly to communicate about the learning in their class, to provide information on the current unit of inquiry, express what the children are learning in language and mathematics, provide the class timetable, give reminders about events, and list a number of resources at school and beyond that will support your child’s learning.
As you enter the Primary School there are many indicators which show the PYP philosophy, based on the Learner Profile, in action. One of the first things you will see are open classroom doors. If we want to promote open-mindedness we need to show that what is happening in the classrooms can be shared with students, faculty and the wider community – a sharing of space, resources and ideas.
The classrooms are arranged in such a way that allows the students to work in groups and exchange information and ideas. Desks are arranged in groups rather than rows, there are discussion areas for the class to gather as a group or work in a manner that is suited to their learning style. They are developing their skills of communication, thinking and inquiring.
Throughout the classrooms and hallways there are displays showing what the students are studying at that point in time. We value the acquisition of knowledge and proudly display it.
A visitor is always struck by the quality of interactions they have with the student body as they walk through the school. Our children are confident communicators and display the principles of manners and courtesy.
Our displays also show that our students are encouraged to reflect upon their own learning and to communicate that in a variety of ways. Our units of inquiry have a strong focus on the students taking some kind of action as a result of what they have learnt and what they have reflected upon. This usually has an element of risk-taking on their part, which helps them on the road to becoming principled adults. Their action takes the form of helping a friend, the class, the school and, eventually, the wider community - truly caring citizens.
Visit our school and see our mission in action.
