After School Athletics, Activities & Clubs

 HOME OF THE DOLPHINS

IICS believes that participation in a wide variety of co-curricular and student-selected activities is a vital part of our educational philosophy. This type of participation is a privilege that requires responsibilities to the school, the activity, the student body, the community, and to the students themselves. These activities contribute immensely to the development of life-long learning skills, enabling all high school students to maximize their educational experience at IICS. While we encourage all students to participate in our extensive range of activities, it is essential that the planning of such participation include a realistic balance of personal and school-related commitments and time management. There is something for everyone, and we encourage all students to find at least one co-curricular activity in which to participate.

IICS participates in CEESA (Central Eastern European School Association), which is our international conference, where we compete with other international schools.

The purpose of all activities and athletics at IICS is to support and balance the education of our students. These activities should promote and supplement the regular curricular program of IICS, as well as reflect the Dolphin values (IB Learner Profile and IICS Rights and Responsibilities)

Co-Curricular activities run on a season based system (fall, winter, and spring). Students and staff will have the opportunity to try different programs each season.

Primary School

Activities

Co-curricular activities are an important part of the primary years program at IICS. These activities allow children the opportunity to utilize their talents and motivate their learning styles in areas other than academics. Extra-curricular activities help foster the whole child. When planning each session, we seek to offer a balanced program: one that has choices for all age groups, includes active and creative activities and introduces new activities as well as the old favourites. We encourage the students to take risks and try something new. We expect them to show commitment to the club by attending each session so that they have the time to find out whether they enjoy the activity and will hopefully continue to enjoy it in their free time.

Clubs

In order to complement our academic program, at IICS we offer a wide variety of experiences and activities intended to meet the various interests and needs of our student body. Student-led clubs are common-interest groups that provide opportunities for students to enrich their experience and appreciation of art, science, sports, community and service. They are also platforms for students to share their passion with the community.

IICS offers opportunities for students to be involved in a wide range of activities but not limited to:

Secondary School

Athletics

At IICS, athletics are more than an extracurricular activity; they are an extension of the classroom, providing opportunities for students to set goals, learn new skills, and gain exposure to the community of a team. These offerings do not exist apart from the total experience but as an essential part of a holistic approach encompassing the intellectual, emotional, physical, social and spiritual elements of each student. We believe the quality of our interscholastic and recreational programs can offer our students the opportunity to further develop their leadership skills and instil important life skills including discipline, teamwork, sportsmanship, and humility. These skills complement what IICS students are already receiving in their classes. Students are encouraged to try out for sports in which they are competitive, but our diverse program provides opportunities to compete at both the interscholastic and intramural levels. The structure of the varsity and junior varsity levels allows students to progress through the program while acquiring new proficiencies and gaining experience. It is a goal of the athletic department to ensure every IICS graduate leaves the school with a desire to lead a rewarding and physically active life.

Activities

The secondary activities program at IICS is designed to stimulate students’ engagement and add a new dimension to classroom learning with hands-on opportunities to discover, create and explore. Encompassing all of the components of a traditional arts program and expanding them with an emphasis on technology as well as community service, students are encouraged to take part in a variety of different programs, challenge themselves and broaden their horizons. The program is divided into two semesters, giving students the opportunity to get involved in different activities and discover new interests.

Off Campus Activities

In keeping with the transdisciplinary nature of the IB curriculum, which stresses the connections between concepts and subjects, IICS teachers make use of the rich history of Turkey and the intricate mosaic of Istanbul as a venue for hands-on, mis-en-scene learning outside the classroom. Classes regularly take trips through the city to experience firsthand the relevant places and processes reflected in their units of study. The historic sites and museums in Istanbul are incomparable, as a city with over 8,000 years of history and a location at the crossroads of empires and civilizations.

As Turkey’s largest city, the Istanbul metropolis affords countless possible outings to places like museums, galleries, businesses, observatories, recycling facilities, factories, charitable organizations, NGOs, and much, much more. With nearly limitless opportunities on which to draw, IICS makes thoughtful use of what the city has to offer.
